A manhunt is underway in Somerset County, Maine, after a man shot and killed a sheriff's deputy early Wednesday, stole his police cruiser and robbed a store afterward, Fox News is reporting.
Corporal Eugene Cole was killed around 1:45 a.m. in Norridgewock, located about 30 miles north of the state capital of Augusta, Somerset County Sheriff Dale Lancaster announced.
He was one of the finest deputies that you would want to meet," Fox News quoted Lancaster from a news conference.
Authorities said the suspect is John Williams, 29, who robbed a convenience store after murdering Cole. Williams ditched Cole's cruiser and is on the run; police say he should be considered armed and dangerous.
