The New York Post's parent company, News Corp., sent a notice to employees that those at the newspaper's New York offices will be required to wear masks regardless of vaccination status in light of recent state laws, Mediaite reported on Monday.
''Given the latest government requirement, starting on Monday, December 13, employees planning to work at the office will be obligated to wear a mask at all times while indoors, regardless of vaccination status,'' the memo obtained by CNN read. ''Exceptions to this rule include when eating, drinking or alone in an enclosed office or room.''
The new requirement came after New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, a Democrat, announced on Friday that masking is required in all indoor public places where vaccination is not mandatory, with fines starting at $1,000.
''I speak all over the state and they're asking for help. They've done everything they can, I applaud our local governments, our county executives, our county administrators, and the local public health departments for doing what they can do,'' Hochul told reporters on Friday, according to Big League Politics. ''I said I'll give them air cover; I will give them the protection.''
The length of the new rule at the Post coincides with the duration of the state's mandate — Dec. 13 to Jan. 15, at which point Hochul will reassess, and the Post will adjust if necessary.
Staff received a similar memo at Dow Jones & Co., a subsidiary of the Murdoch family-owned News Corp., according to CNN.
