Maine Gov. Writes 'Stolen Election' on Results of Disputed Race

Maine Gov. Paul LePage, a Republican, left a note describing a controversial election as “stolen” after signing off on the results, NECN reports.

LePage certified Democratic Rep.-elect Jared Golden’s victory over Rep. Bruce Poliquin, a Republican, which Golden won thanks to the state’s ranked-choice voting law. Poliquin initially sued to prevent Golden from being named the winner, but a federal judge dismissed the lawsuit in December. When signing off on the results, LePage wrote “stolen election” next to his signature.

“I’ve signed off on the CD2 election result as it’s no longer in federal court. Ranked Choice Voting didn’t result in a true majority as promised-simply a plurality measured differently,” LePage wrote in a statement on Twitter, which was accompanied by a photo of the certificate. “It didn’t keep big money out of politics & didn’t result in a more civil election.”
