The Pope’s visit to Rio de Janeiro this week has underscored his popularity among Catholics, especially young Catholics. But that popularity is not echoed within the walls of the Vatican, according to an exclusive LIGNET source who is closely connected to Vatican politics. Pope Francis, says the source, faces stiff opposition in his efforts to reform the majority-Italian Roman Curia, the central governing bureaucracy of the church. The next few months will be critical in determining whether he is able to make headway and return the focus of the Curia to the central mission of building the church.
