The Latvian foreign minister said that at the same time Russia is getting more sophisticated in its hacking and fake news operations, the West still does not understand just how good the Russians are at it, The Guardian reported.
Edgars Rinkevics said Russia has automated its fake news campaigns, peppering eastern European countries over social media via bots, calling the strategy "very systematic and a new way to spread propaganda amongst young people."
Meanwhile, Rinkevics said the West is still woefully ignorant about Russia's capabilities.
"It is essential for all U.S. allies to understand the mechanics of how you combine cyberattack and then use it as [an] information weapon to influence people's opinions," Rinkevics told a London audience, the Guardian reported.
"If you have hacking, fake news with a purpose, it is very difficult to react. We can find out what happened, but it is very difficult to prove. The whole law in this area needs addressing," said Rinkevics.
