Giant kites could soon be seen in the skies over Scotland to harness wind power to generate energy, Reuters reported.

The technology involves rigging two giant kites to either side of a turbine. The first kite rises with the wind, moving in a figure-of-eight pattern.

The movement pulls a rope that turns a turbine, generating power, a representative of Kite Power Systems explains in a demonstration in Scotland.

As one kite descends, the other rises in tandem, meaning electricity can be generated almost constantly.

According to Reuters, officials believe off-shore kite farms could generate enough energy to provide power to around 3,000 homes.
