President Donald Trump has a strong enough case when it comes to special counsel Robert Mueller's case, and he shouldn't let himself be distracted, Rep. Pete King said Monday.
He also told Fox News' "America's Newsroom" he wishes Trump hadn't used his Twitter account to coin a nickname for Rep. Adam Schiff.
"I don't think there will be evidence of collusion at all," the New York Republican said. "He shouldn't let Adam Schiff get him distracted."
King said he's known the California Democrat for a number of years, and thinks he has become "very partisan" over the past year, including saying he knows Trump appointed acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker to stop the Mueller investigation.
"[There is] is absolutely no evidence for that," said King. "I think Adam hurts his own case by making these charges without having any evidence...I don't know Matt Whitaker. From all indications, he is extremely qualified. The Justice Department said his appointment is legal. Leave it at that and let's go forward."
King also disagreed with Schiff's response to Trump's taunt, after he asked if the president wrote his own tweet or if his attorneys did while helping him answer Mueller's questions.
"I'm sure the president was with his lawyers and that's what you have lawyers for," said King. "When you give written interrogatories or questions you always consult with your lawyers. In the end it's the president who is responsible and under oath and submitting these and so they are the president's answers. I think Adam also is trying to be a little cute here."
