President Donald Trump will decide on his own whether to release his tax returns, but most Americans do not care if he makes them public at all, White House Council of Economic Advisers' Kevin Hassett said Tuesday.
"It goes back to the election, and I think if the American people were concerned about it he wouldn't be president," Hassett told Fox News' "America's Newsroom." "I can also say there are a bunch of rules about what we have to report. Folks who are listening – it will be completely boring – but Google me online and look at my public disclosure forms and we have to list every asset if we come in as a government employee."
Meanwhile, the president is delivering on his tax cuts, which have increased growth, jobs, and wages nationwide, said Hassett.
"I think that really connects with people," Hassett said. "Tax cuts can be an abstract thing. 3% growth instead of 2% growth but there is evidence everywhere you go the economy is reaching down into distressed communities throughout the country. The president is delivering that message."
Hassett said he thinks it is important to remind people that if they look back at 2016, the CBO forecast what 2018 would look like.
"They said the economy that President Trump inherited would create 58,000 jobs a month," Hassett said. "If you look at what we did last year, we created 206,000 jobs a month. There is a big, big increase in growth, and job creation, and wages that must be explained by something."
