Rep. Karen Handel, R-Ga., on Thursday conceded to her Democratic opponent, Lucy McBath, in the race for Georgia’s 6th Congressional District, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
“After carefully reviewing all of the election results data, it is clear that I came up a bit short on Tuesday,” the congresswoman said in a message to her supporters. “Congratulations to Representative-Elect Lucy McBath and send her only good thoughts and much prayer for the journey that lies ahead for her.”
Handel won her seat only last year, when she defeated Democrat Jon Ossoff to replace Tom Price in what became the most expensive congressional race in United States history.
McBath, an advocate for gun control whose son, Jordan Davis, was shot and killed in 2012, will be the third black woman elected to the House in Georgia and the first person of color to represent the 6th District.
“We’ve sent a strong message to the entire country. Absolutely nothing - no politician & no special interest - is more powerful than a mother on a mission,” McBath tweeted on Thursday.
