Everytown for Gun Safety made its first foray into congressional races, a successful one after it poured $1.35 million into the primary and runoff of winning Democrat Lucy McBath in Georgia, Axios reports.
Whether a bellwether or a blip, Everytown thinks gun safety is a winning issue in November's midterms, and it has endorsed 16 more state and local candidates.
"Everytown is proud to support Moms Demand Action and survivor candidates, who are exactly what Americans are looking for this election season: proven leaders who value public safety over NRA priorities," Everytown President John Feinblatt said on the group's website.
McBath defeated Kevin Abel by 7 points in the primary runoff this week in the Georgia 6th, the same district lost by Democratic hopeful Jon Ossof in last year's special election.
McBath's opponent in the general, Rep. Karen Handel, defeated Ossof in 2017 and is backed by the NRA.
McBath has made gun control a linchpin of her platform after years of speaking out against gun violence. McBath's son was shot and killed in Florida in 2012 by a man who objected to the loud music coming from his car.
McBath was among a group of mothers who spoke at the 2016 Democratic National Convention against gun violence.
"You’re going to see young people come out and vote in November, and I can assure you the mass shooting generation is going to be a single-issue voter," Feinblatt told Axios.
