The United States will not extradite billionaire businessman and Chinese dissident Guo Wengui back to China, The Washington Free Beacon is reporting.
The Free Beacon attributed its information to an unnamed senior Justice Department official. According to the website, Guo had close ties to the Chinese intelligence community and access to its secrets until about two years ago.
Guo now lives in New York City. He is described by the website as a pro-democracy advocate and has warned China's government is trying to subvert the United States.
Guo had recently revealed a top-secret document from the China detailing orders to send more than two dozen intelligence agents to the U.S. to conduct operations "for further crushing overseas anti-China hostile forces," the Free Beacon said.
The New York Post had reported Guo fled China in 2015 following a fraud conviction. He has denied the charge, according to the newspaper.
China's Public Security Minister Guo Shengkun met with Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Oct. 9 for talks that included discussion of fugitives sought by China, the Free Beacon said.
The website said Sessions has determined Guo will not be forcibly returned to China.
Guo welcomed word that he is not going to be pushed out of the U.S., the Free Beacon said. said.
"America is the safest place that always welcomes and protects the persecuted around world because of its tradition and rule-of-law," he said.
