Iowa Republican Sen. Joni Ernst tried not to get into the Donald Trump debate when asked about it on Tuesday, but didn't come out sounding like a fan.
"Well, I think that's one of the great things about America is that regardless if you meet the qualifications anybody can run for president. And we have that case here. We have a lot of folks jumping in. One is certainly Mr. Trump," Ernst said on Fox News Channel's
"Your World with Neil Cavuto."
"You don't have an opinion one way or another?" Cavuto asked.
"I don't have an opinion," Ernst said, adding that she would prefer to see a debate about the issues rather than Republicans tearing each other apart.
Cavuto countered that Trump, who has jumped to the lead in many GOP presidential polls, seems to have no trouble picking fights with others in the party.
"He is happy to do that," Ernst conceded, "and I tell you that our voters at the end of the day will make that determination whether they appreciate the things he's been saying or not."
Trump was in Ernst's state on Saturday when he sparked his latest controversy by saying that Sen. John McCain is considered a war hero only because he was captured and held as a prisoner of war, adding, "I like people who weren't captured."
