Sen. John Thune, following up on warnings from CIA Director John Brennan about the danger of ISIS attacks occurring in the United States, said Thursday "absolute vigilance" is needed to Keep Americans safe.
"I think we have to assume that's what they are planning, based on the success they have had and this most recent attack that fits the formula from Paris and Brussels and Orlando and San Bernardino," the South Carolina Republican told Fox News' "America's Newsroom"
co-host Martha MacCallum.
"We have to use absolute vigilance in this country assuming that's their ultimate objective to successfully conduct attacks here in the United States," he continued. "I think our intelligence community, everybody will be doing everything they can to prevent this. We as Americans have to be sure we are exercising all caution when we travel."
Congressional leaders in the House and Senate are currently preparing a short-term reauthorization of the Federal Aviation Administration that will include a handful of permanent policy provisions on airline safety, including enhanced consumer protections for airline passengers.
Thune, who chairs the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, said Thursday the bill should come up for a vote as early as next week, and it contains several important provisions, including protection for people outside security checkpoints, where they are vulnerable to attack.
Further, said Thune, there are already many people on the national "no-fly" list who can't board planes, so "you have to hope that we'll be strengthening all those efforts and our intelligence community will be paying careful attention to anybody who fits that criteria."
Thune said he does believe the United States needs to be even more engaged, though, when it comes to fighting back against ISIS.
"The best thing we can do is to deny the jihadists a territorial base of operation and defeat them there," Thune said. "But this radicalization that the attempt to get people in country around the world radicalized to commit these acts of terror is a serious threat, and the one that concerns me, I think, about the homeland and Americans here.
