Barrasso: Trump Call for Extra Sanctions on Iran 'Right Decision'

(Fox News' "America's Newsroom")

President Donald Trump's call to "substantially increase" sanctions on Iran is the "right decision" after the attack on major Saudi oilfields this past weekend, Sen. John Barrasso, R-Wyo., said Wednesday.

"The president is taking a measured response to this," Barrasso told Fox News' "America's Newsroom." "The sanctions have been biting. They've been hurting. Iran has been suffering as a result. Their currency has been devalued significantly. Less buying power there."

Trump tweeted Wednesday he had ordered Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin to increase the sanctions, but the full details of what that would involve were not immediately listed.

Barrasso said Iran is behind the attacks because it wants to drive up world oil prices because it needs money from oil sales.

He said he also disagrees with Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., after his tweet Trump's measured response to Iran to the downing of an American drone earlier this summer was seen as a sign of weakness.

"I've never seen weakness from this president," Barrasso said. "He has lots of options to consider. He doesn't need to do anything abruptly."

Also on Wednesday, Barrasso praised Trump's decision to name Robert C. O'Brien as his new national security adviser.

"He will do a fine job and the president gets to choose who he thinks is best in that position," Barrasso said. "That's not something that is confirmed by the Senate. That has to do with the trust of the president and that individual for the information that he receives."

He also commented on the continuing controversy over claims made in The New York Times about Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, calling the decision to leave out details about an alleged assault "the policies of personal destruction against a fine judge and justice."

"You have an author who is trying to sell books," he said. "You have The New York Times, who I believe is trying to undermine the authority and credibility of the Supreme Court to try to intimidate the court into certain decisions."
