Members of President Joe Biden's family capitalized on the longtime politician's success to bolster their multi-million-dollar business pursuits, The Wall Street Journal reported.
In addition to first son Hunter Biden, the president's younger brothers, Jim Biden and Frank Biden, sought to profit from their blood connection, according to interviews and public records.
The Journal also reported that Joe Biden, on at least a few occasions, was more present in his family's business dealings than he or they have acknowledged.
However, the Journal said its examination of the president's relatives' business dealings did not find evidence that Joe Biden personally benefited from the business enterprises.
House Republicans launched a formal impeachment hearing Thursday against Joe Biden, promising to "provide accountability" as they probe the family finances and lucrative business dealings of his son.
The Journal found that Biden family members would take phone calls from Joe Biden during their business meetings and occasionally include him in the conversations — attempts to show off the connection to power, according to former business associates.
"Jim Biden has been an entrepreneur and executive for more than five decades and is clear that he always conducted himself ethically and honorably in all his business dealings," a spokesperson for Jim Biden said.
Hunter Biden's lawyer, Abbe Lowell, has said the first son wasn't in business with Joe Biden and that any interactions with his father might have had with Hunter Biden's business associates was "small talk."
Frank Biden was hired by the Illinois-based industrial manufacturing firm Federal Signal Corp. to help connect the company with Florida lawmakers.
During a weekly call, Frank Biden frequently would interrupt the meeting and say he had to take a call from "the big guy," as he put it.
Frank Biden would say: "I've got to put you on hold, the big guy is calling me," said Matthew Brady, then working at Federal Signal. "I thought, 'OK, great, your brother is the vice president.'"
In its story, the Journal said there are no rules that prevent politically connected families from leaning on their name to advance their careers.
Jim Biden and Hunter Biden worked to build ties to a Chinese oil company called CEFC China Energy in the months after Joe Biden left the vice presidency.
The Journal reported that the family name helped Jim Biden and Hunter Biden when they took over hedge fund Paradigm Global Advisors in 2006.
The Bidens asked Wall Street veteran Charles Provini to serve as the fund's president.
"I was a little star-struck at the time perhaps," Provini said about Joe Biden occasionally joining business calls. "I think most of the things that he was saying were just pleasantries. It might have been for credibility."
