Jeff Flake: Brewer Should Veto Anti-Gay Marriage Bill

By    |   Sunday, 23 February 2014 11:08 AM EST

Arizona Republican Sen. Jeff Flake wants his state's governor to veto controversial legislation that will allow business owners to cite their religious beliefs when denying service to homosexual customers.

Flake sent a short, cryptic message on Twitter Sunday afternoon, simply saying:  "I hope Governor Brewer vetoes SB 1062."

He hasn't commented further about the tweet, reports The Hill. The state's Republican governor, Jan Brewer,  is attending the national governor's meeting in Washington, and says she's carefully considering whether to veto or sign the bill that was passed by her fellow Republicans.

The Religious Freedom Restoration Act allows businesses to operate based on their own religious beliefs. Supporters say the bill is needed so business owners can follow their faith, but critics say the bill allows businesses to discriminate against homosexuals - or anyone else they say violates their beliefs.

The Center for Arizona Policy, a conservative organization which supports the bill, said that the legislation "seeks to ensure that state laws that violate the religious liberty of private persons cannot be enforced simply because the government is not technically a party to the case."

But Arizona businesses are urging Brewer to veto the law, with the greater Phoenix Economic Council saying it could have "profound, negative" effects on the state's economy.
