Joe Biden's brother told executives in a pitch on behalf of possible investors to a Florida healthcare company last year that the former vice president's now-defunct cancer project would promote their business, according to a published report Thursday.
James Biden pitched the Biden Cancer Initiative to officials at Integrate Oral Care during a telephone call last November, Michael Frey, CEO of Diverse Medical Management, a health-care firm suing James Biden, told Politico for its report.
James Biden's business partners were seeking investors for Integrate, according to Frey and court documents.
Frey had a business relationship with James Biden and his associates — and he introduced the investors to Integrate, Politico reports.
According to Frey, James Biden told Integrate that he would get the Biden Cancer Initiative to promote the company's oral rinse product, which is used by cancer patients.
Frey told Politico he had participated in the call, adding that James Biden said "his brother would be very excited about this product."
However, a spokesman for James Biden disagreed.
"These charges stem from a frivolous lawsuit and are pure fantasy," David Fuscus, the spokesman for James Biden and Platinum Global Partners, told Politico. "We are not surprised that such baseless accusations have emerged during the Democratic primaries.
"Jim Biden has been clear and consistent that he does not, and has never, discussed his business ventures with his brother."
Andrew Bates, a spokesman for the Biden campaign, referred Politico to Washington lawyer Brian Smith.
Smith said that the cancer initiative, launched by Joe Biden and Dr. Jill Biden in 2017, closed in July. He added that he could not immediately offer any further comment.
According to Politico, Diverse Medical Management is suing James Biden and his associates in Tennessee, accusing them of offering to invest in the company so as to drive it into bankruptcy and steal its business model.
Integrate is also suing James Biden's associates in Palm Beach County, Fla., accusing them of failing to follow through on $3 million investment deal.
An Integrate lawyer declined to comment, Politico reports.
