CIA director Gina Haspel heard audio that purportedly depicts the murder of Saudi dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul when she visited Turkey this week, according to a new report.
The Washington Post cited sources who said the audio was played for Haspel during her meetings with Turkish officials. Khashoggi, a citizen of Saudi Arabia and a U.S. resident, was critical of the Saudi government and had been writing columns for the Post before his death.
The kingdom acknowledged last weekend that Khashoggi was killed Oct. 2 during a fistfight after entering the Saudi consulate. Reports out of Turkey, however, point to an organized Saudi assassination team that traveled to Istanbul that morning to conduct the gruesome killing that reportedly involved torture and dismemberment.
It is unclear how the Turks obtained the alleged audio recording.
It has been alleged Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman ordered the killing, a charge the Saudi government denies.
