Sen. Jack Reed, the top Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee, Friday accused President Donald Trump of lying about a CIA report concluding Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman ordered the murder of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi.
"Yes," the Rhode Island senator told CNN's "New Day," when he was asked if he thinks Trump had lied. "The CIA concluded that the crown prince of Saudi Arabia was directly involved in the assassination of Khashoggi."
Trump said Thursday the CIA had not "come to a conclusion" about the crown prince's alleged involvement. Last week, though, sources told CNN the CIA had concluded the crown prince ordered Khashoggi to be killed, a claim the Saudi government denies.
The columnist, a frequent critic of the crown prince, died at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.
"They did it, as has been reported to the press, with high confidence, which is the highest level of accuracy that they will vouch for," Reed said. "It's based on facts, it's based on analysis. The notion that they didn't reach a conclusion is just unsubstantiated. The CIA has made that clear."
