Issa: How Dare Obama Say He Can Probe IRS?

House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa lambasted President Barack Obama on Tuesday for saying his administration is up to the task of investigating the IRS over its targeting of conservative political groups.

"How dare the administration imply that they're going to get to the bottom of it," the California Republican asked in an interview on CBS's "This Morning."

"This was the targeting of the president's political enemies effectively, and lies about it during the election year, so that it wasn’t discovered until afterward. The fact is, this is the kind of investigation that has to be open and transparent to the American people," Issa said.

The IRS confessed last week that agents in its Cincinnati office subjected conservative groups applying for tax-exempt status to higher scrutiny than others.

The IRS has apologized and promised to mend its ways. But that's not enough, Issa said. "Congress has to hold people accountable for it," he said.

He called the IRS actions "deliberate," "repeated" and "pervasive."

"These were effectively ideological attacks. Whether they were done by partisans who were political appointees or not really doesn't matter. They targeted conservatives. They targeted people who wanted to teach the Constitution or push for smaller government which happens to be what our Founding Fathers wanted," said Issa.
