Israeli Ambassador: ‘Clear Red Line’ Involves Chemical Weapons

By    |   Sunday, 09 December 2012 11:57 PM EST

Michael Oren, Israel’s ambassador to the United States, said Sunday the state’s biggest concern is banned chemical weapons from Syria getting into the hands of Hezbollah rebels.

“We’re watching it, and I will tell you that we have a very clear red line about those chemical weapons passing into the wrong hands,” Oren said on “Fox News Sunday.” “Can you imagine Hezbollah, with its 70,000 rockets, would get its hands on chemical weapons that could kill thousands of people?”

He said a politically stable Egypt is another big concern and an important factor in quelling fighting in the region. He said the country could continue to play a constructive role in the future if it “overcomes its internal difficulties as quickly and as peacefully as possible.”

“The most important issue from our perspective is stopping the flow of missiles and other weapons into Gaza,” Oren said. “We’re discussing this openly with the Egyptians, and it’s key, because that’s where the bottleneck is. If we can stop that, we can do a tremendous amount toward reinforcing the ceasefire.”
