Texas Republican Reps. Louie Gohmert and Bill Flores have introduced a bill in the House offering $1 million reward to anyone who can recover missing IRS emails, the
Houston Chronicle reports.
The Internal Revenue Service has claimed that that it lost two years’ worth of former administrator Lois Lerner's emails that may shed light on the agency’s targeting of tea party and other conservative groups.
"We don’t have a Justice Department, we have a 'just-us' — or an injustice department," said Gohmert. "We know those emails are out there. We know they can be found. We just need the people to help find them."
The proposed bill also offers $500,000 to a whistleblower who can provide information on the person or persons who destroyed the emails.
Gohmert and Flores also called for a 20 percent reduction in IRS salaries until the missing emails are recovered, the Chronicle said.
Gohmert said that the IRS claim that the emails were wiped out due to faulty old computer was blatantly "ridiculous."
The attorney for Lerner, who oversaw the IRS scrutiny of conservative groups, maintains that his client "didn't have anything to do with the destruction of her computer."
William Taylor III said, "It's a little brazen to think she did this on purpose."
Gohmert also slammed Attorney General Eric Holder, who has denied requests from Texas GOP Sen. Ted Cruz for a special prosecutor to investigate the IRS targeting scandal, the Chronicle added.
"You’ve got to have an attorney general that’s serious about justice and this one is not," Gohmert said. "He will not produce, he helps hide material, I think he needs to go, I think even he won’t resign; we need to impeach him. He’s got to go."
