President-elect Donald Trump's threat to sink Iranian ships was "just a joke" according to one of the country's generals.
"The person who has recently achieved power, has talked off the top of his head! Threatening Iran in the Persian Gulf is just a joke," General Mohammad Hossein Bagheri said, according to The Times of Israel.
He added that presidential candidates in the United States "eat too much sugar" during campaigns, referring to a Farsi proverb about talking nonsense.
Trump said in September that Iranian ships attempting to provoke America "will be shot out of the water" if he were president. In January, Iran captured 10 American sailors after their ship swerved off course into Iranian waters, only to be released the next day.
The president-elect also criticized the nuclear deal reached with Iran, formerly called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said there's "no possibility" that Trump will overturn the deal, telling his cabinet that it "cannot be overturned by one government's decision," according to Bloomberg.
"Iran's understanding in the nuclear deal was that the accord was not concluded with one country or government but was approved by a resolution of the UN Security Council and there is no possibility that it can be changed by a single government," Rouhani said.
