Ipsos Poll: Florida Abortion Amendment Would Fall Short

By    |   Monday, 15 April 2024 04:14 PM EDT

A majority of Florida registered voters say they would vote to expand abortion access in November, but it falls short of the threshold to become law, according to a new USA Today/Ipsos poll released Saturday.

Amendment 4 would fail, according to the survey, as 57% said they would support the measure. However, 60% is needed to pass a state constitutional amendment. Further, 36% said they were opposed while 6% said they were unsure, according to the poll results.

The results come in the aftermath of a poll last week that found that 57% of Florida voters said the state's six-week abortion ban is too severe. The Florida Supreme Court upheld the state's current 15-week ban as constitutional, and the six-week ban is set to start May 1. And 64% said they were aware of the Florida high court's ruling.

Florida voters will consider a ballot measure in November establishing a constitutional right to an abortion before fetal viability, which is estimated at about 24 weeks, or when necessary to protect the mother's health.

More than 6 in 10 (63%) Florida independents said they would vote for the measure but just 34% of Republicans would, according to the Ipsos poll.

Further, white Floridians are more likely than Hispanic Floridians to vote in support of the measure, 57%-34%, according to the survey.

Floridians Protecting Freedom, which is pushing the "Yes On 4" campaign, has raised nearly $20 million to date from abortion-rights groups, the Tallahassee Democrat reported.
