"X-Men" actor Hugh Jackman was a real-life superhero Saturday, helping in the rescue of his 15-year-old son and other swimmers suddenly swept up in a powerful riptide at a beach in his homeland Australia, reports say.
In a heart-pounding, 5-second video released by Nine News, Jackman can be seen linking arms with swimmers at Bondi Beach in Sydney to escape the riptide, while motioning to others still in the water to get to shore.
Lifeguards then joined the effort using boards and jet skis to rescue additional swimmers, the clip shows.
"He stopped and helped this bloke stand up and he also helped his son," one unnamed witness tells the subscription-only Sunday Telegraph,
according to the New York Post.
"The swell was pretty nasty. It was a beautiful day, but the swell was up."
The North Bondi Surf Life Saving Club thanked the 47-year-old actor for his bravery later in the day
on Instagram, posting "@thehughjackman was also spotted assisting with rescues! Thanks Hugh. Well done."
