Another big White House shakeup is in the works — with preparations underway to replace national security adviser H.R. McMaster as early as next month, NBC News reported.

The move is being orchestrated by chief of staff John Kelly and Defense Secretary James Mattis, the outlet reported Thursday, citing five unnamed sources.

According to NBC News, a leading candidate to succeed the former Army lieutenant general and war veteran is Ford Motor Co. honcho Stephen Biegun, NBC News reported. CNN also reported that McMaster was likely to leave "before the end of the month."

But the White House pushed back on the reports Thursday night.

President Donald Trump told a spokesman for the National Security Council that the article was “fake news.”

“I was just with President Trump and H.R. McMaster in the Oval Office,” the spokesman, Michael Anton, said in a statement provided to pool reporters. “President Trump said that the NBC News story is ‘fake news,’ and told McMaster that he is doing a great job.”

Raj Shah, the White House principal deputy press secretary, also cast doubt on the reports. He told pool reporters that the administration often dealt with “rumor and innuendo about senior administration officials.”

“There are no personnel announcements at this time,” Shah said.

The move would the latest in a string of staff reshuffling, and comes after months of strained relations with the president and McMaster, NBC News reported.

Biegun is vice president of international governmental affairs for the Ford Motor Company — and was on the National Security Council staff from 2001 to 2003, including as a senior staffer for then-national security adviser Condoleezza Rice, NBC News reported.

Rice introduced Biegun to Mattis, recommending him for a position in the administration, NBC News reported, citing an unnamed associate of Rice. According to NBC News, after Mattis met with Biegun at a think tank event, Mattis was convinced Biegun would be a good fit for the national security adviser role.
