House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi responded to calls that she step down as the Democrats' leader in the House, saying she was there to stay to protect Obamacare, which she called her "fight" and her "mission," the Washington Examiner reported Sunday.
"When the president became president, I saw the threat to [Obamacare]," Pelosi told ABC on Sunday. "I said, 'I gotta stay to take care of the Affordable Care Act.' And, that's my fight, my mission, but also to have women, women at the table, at the leadership table."
Pelosi came under fire earlier this month when Rep, Linda Sanchez, D-Calif., said Pelosi, as well as Minority Whip Steny Hoyer of Maryland and Assistant Minority Leader James Clyburn of South Carolina, should "pass that torch" of leadership to younger aspiring members of Congress. Sanchez is the fifth ranking Democrat in the House and is vice chairwoman of the House Democratic Caucus.
"I do think we have a great array of talent," Pelosi said. "And, I have promoted it all along the way. I think when you see some of the people who represent the House Democrats, like Adam Schiff and the rest, people I have promoted in the party, getting them ready. It's up to the caucus to select its next leaderships.
"I enjoy the support of my caucus," she added.
