House GOP Group Proposes Raising Retirement Age to 69

By    |   Friday, 16 June 2023 02:54 PM EDT

A conservative group of Republican lawmakers in the U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday unveiled a proposal to slash domestic spending, including raising the full retirement age to 69.

The 176-member House Republican Study Committee, which has served as the conservative caucus of House Republicans and a leading influencer on the right since its original founding in 1973, in its "fiscal blueprint" proposed slashing total spending by $16.3 trillion over a decade, including $5 trillion from discretionary funds appropriated by Congress.

It would also make tax cuts permanent for the wealthy, leave Pentagon spending untouched, reduce Medicare premiums, use a more accurate measure of inflation, reduce the federal government's footprint, end Dodd-Frank bailout authority for big banks, among other items.

The budget is made up of over 220 individual bills and initiatives from RSC Members.

"The RSC budget would implement common-sense policies to prevent the impending debt disaster, tame inflation, grow the economy, protect our national security, and defund [President Joe] Biden's woke priorities," said Rep. Ben Cline, R-Va., chairman of the group's Budget and Spending Task Force.

Democrats slammed the proposal.

"Budget Committee Democrats will make sure every American family knows that House Republicans want to force Americans to work longer for less, raise families' costs, weaken our nation, and shrink our economy — all while wasting billions of dollars on more favors to special interests and handouts to the ultra-wealthy," said Rep. Brendan Boyle, D-Pa.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said the RSC budget "amounts to a devastating attack on Medicare, Social Security, and Americans' access to health coverage and prescription drugs."
