White House Deputy Press Secretary Hogan Gidley Thursday defended President Donald Trump for his comments about accepting information from foreign governments about rivals, complaining that his full response to the question posed to him wasn't shown.

"Look, I wish the media would take the time to look at the full clip," Gidley said on Fox News' "America's Newsroom." "I was standing just feet away from the president in his exchange with (ABC News') George Stephanopolous. It was clear the president said if there was wrongdoing he would turn it over to the FBI."

He accused Democrats of "going down the ridiculous rabbit holes" against Trump for years, from the time he was a candidate until now.

"The crooked Hillary (Clinton) campaign, they're the ones who solicited and paid for information from a foreign entity in Christopher Steele, who got fake information from Russia," said Gidley. "They used it to weaponize the entire campaign against this president, first as a candidate and now as the president of the United States. It's absolutely ridiculous that we are having this conversation."

Gidley also spoke out about the continuing investigations into Trump, saying the president is the "most transparent" in history.

"This is not oversight. This is overreach," he said. "They're going after people in this administration and trying to shame the president. Because you don't like the outcome of the game you don't get to play it over. That's what House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry) Nadler is doing to this president. It is stupid and pointless."
