The Democratic Party's presidential candidates face a risky mission – to attack Joe Biden in an effort to knock the former Vice President Joe Biden out of the race, conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt says.
Hewitt made his comments in a column for The Washington Post posted Thursday evening.
“Biden himself knows he’s the battleship everyone else needs to sink,” he said. “He expects the torpedoes. But will anyone launch them?
“Attacking Biden is necessary, but it is risky. Each individual candidate would prefer for everyone else to do the attacking and avoid the ire Biden fans will attach to whomever bruises Uncle Joe.”
Hewitt maintained the Democrats' presidential debates offer the best forum to go after Biden.
“Each one that Biden doesn’t lose, he will win conclusively,” Hewitt said.
He noted a few candidates will likely hold their fire when it comes to Biden, particularly Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif.
Harris “has a strong shot at being Biden’s running mate if he makes it through the gauntlet and if she doesn’t screw up,” Hewitt said. And he pointed out Pete Buttigieg’s early strong showing has likely guaranteed him a Cabinet seat in a Democratic administration.
“For all of the other would-be nominees, though, this is probably their first and last presidential rodeo,” he said. “So they have to think seriously about using the debate spotlight to do maximum damage to Biden.”
And he offered advice to Democrat candidates: “Craft the verbal arrow in advance and aim it at Joe Biden, and hope everyone else does as well.”
