Radio host Hugh Hewitt says President Donald Trump could learn from Richard Nixon.

Hewitt, who worked for Nixon after the former president left office, made his remarks in a column for The Washington Post.

“Nixon’s oft-repeated view in his unique retirement: Look forward. Always. There isn’t any upside in replaying the past or its decisions, glories and failures,” Hewitt said.

And he added: Nixon “had no bitter recriminations, no dwelling on what might have been (or) how he might have acted differently.”

Hewitt maintained that "if Trump embraces that outlook, his prospects for reelection are excellent.”

He cited a long list of Trump’s accomplishments, including two Supreme Court justices, tax reform, and rebuilding the military.

“And, of course, the economy is cooking even as the stock market makes one of its periodic and inevitable ‘corrections,’ Hewitt said.

“Given all that, Nixon’s attitude in retirement — that only today and tomorrow matter — would serve Trump well.”

Hewitt urged Trump to “find a new secretary of defense quickly” and to insist attorney general nominee William Barr “commit to not recusing himself from the supervisory role” over special counsel Robert Mueller.

He also urged Trump to prepare a State of the Union that “hammers on the costs of prescription drugs and the need and means of infrastructure repair.”

“The abundant successes of the first two years cannot be erased by pundits and their over-the-top rhetoric,” he said. “So just look forward, trust your best people…”
