White House Piles Up Healthcare Waivers: 1,372 and Rising

By    |   Monday, 16 May 2011 11:57 AM EDT

The White House continues to grant plenty of waivers to its own healthcare law. The Obama administration approved 204 in April, pushing the total to 1,372, The Hill reports.

The temporary waivers apply to the part of the law requiring health plans to offer at least $750,000 worth of annual medical benefits before making patients pay for their own care. Republicans have pointed to the waivers as proof of big flaws in the law and favoritism.

“The fact that over 1,000 waivers have been granted is a tacit admission that the healthcare law is fundamentally flawed," House Energy and Commerce Chairman Fred Upton said in March. He is one of three House committee chairmen who are investigating the waivers.
