A new poll found that Americans support climate-friendly legislation such as the Green New Deal over a standalone carbon tax.
The Atlantic obtained the results of a survey from YouGov and Data for Progress, which found that the Green New Deal — the climate legislation introduced by freshman Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., earlier this year — is more popular than once thought.
Roughly 59% of those surveyed support legislation similar to the Green New Deal, while about 22% are against it.
Support for a carbon tax is at about 50%, and 30% are either somewhat opposed or strongly opposed to it.
It's worth noting that Data for Progress is a progressive group, and the homepage of its website has language supporting left-leaning ideas such as Medicare for all Americans and abolishing Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE). It's not known who was surveyed in the poll or how big the polling size was.
Republicans and other critics of the Green New Deal say it is too expensive — the estimated cost is pushing $100 trillion — and note that its goals are unrealistic.
