Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., condemned a joint statement by the leaders of France, Germany, and the United Kingdom after the U.S. attack on Iran, saying in a Saturday post on X that European leaders had "gone pathetically soft" as President Donald Trump launched what the U.S. calls Operation Epic Fury against Iran.
"To say I'm disappointed in the joint statement by leaders from France, Germany, and the UK regarding Operation Epic Fury is an understatement," Graham wrote, arguing that Europe shows urgency on Russia's invasion of Ukraine but not on Iran.
He called Europe "pathetic" and said the leaders were "adding insult to injury" by suggesting negotiations should continue.
Graham said Europe had "lost your zeal for confronting evil apparently unless it's on your front porch."
"It is so sad to see Western democracies lose their passion for justice and a sense of right and wrong, the further away from their shores the event occurs," he said.
Addressing the Iranian people, he added, "President Trump heard your cries. Help has arrived in large measure."
The joint statement from French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the three countries did not participate in the strikes but were in close contact with international partners, including the United States, Israel, and partners in the region.
It condemned Iranian attacks on countries in the region, urged Iran to refrain from indiscriminate strikes, and called for a resumption of negotiations and a negotiated solution, adding that "the Iranian people must be allowed to determine their future."
The statement was issued as the conflict intensified following the U.S. strikes, with the three European leaders urging Iran to halt its counterattacks and return to diplomacy while emphasizing regional stability and protection of civilians.
