Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said Sunday he intends to “place blame” for the killing of Saudi critic Jamal Khashoggi “at the feet” of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
In an interview on NBC News’ “Meet The Press,” Graham said he’s working to invoke the Magnitsky Act to punish “all concerned.”
“I am going to do whatever I can to place blame where I believe it lies,” he said. “I am going to put it to the feet of the crown prince, who has been a destructive force in the Middle East.”
He said he believes the crown prince not only knew about the slaying but “sanctioned” it.
“I'm not telling Saudi Arabia who to make crown prince or in charge,” he said. “I'm trying to tell them and the world that when it comes to the crown prince that exists today, I think he has …stepped all over our values. He has put us in a box. And I will leave it up to the president to find out how to handle Saudi Arabia from the executive branch side.
“From the legislative branch side, we are going to do as much as we can, as hard as we can, to send a signal to the world that this is not the way we expect an ally to act,” he said.
In the interview, Graham also said he thinks Congress may be able to handle an investigation of FISA misuse and the FBI investigation of Hillary Clinton’s email use as Secretary of State.
“One thing I am not suggesting is that we go back and try to prosecute Secretary Clinton,” he said.
But he said “we need to get to the bottom” of both the FISA warrant and Clinton’s email use “maybe the [Senate Judiciary] Committee can do it.”
Graham is expected to be the panel’s chairman next year.
