Republicans in the Senate are urging President Donald Trump to nominate a new permanent attorney general amid rising concern over the safety of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation, Politico reports.
Although many members of the GOP have denied that Trump will do anything to threaten Mueller’s investigation, the president laid into the special counsel in a series of tweets on Thursday. His recent appointment of acting attorney general Matthew Whitaker, whose appointment has been controversial, only adds to the concern, according to Republicans.
“If we had some confidence that there is somebody nominated that would be confirmed in a reasonable period of time, to me it seems like it would relieve a lot of the controversy,” said Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn of Texas.
“It would be helpful to start moving … so we can have that person in place as soon as possible,” added Oklahoma Republican Sen. James Lankford. “Whoever is going to be there would have to make clear statements about what they intend to do on the special counsel. The sooner the better. Let’s get it resolved."
Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., however, told Politico, “I want to see the president take his time and find somebody that he’s comfortable with and will serve the American people well. However long that takes is however long it takes.”
