House Republicans say a bill that would provide care for a child born after an attempted abortion will be a major issue during the 2020 presidential election, The Washington Free Beacon reports.

House GOP whip Steve Scalise, R-La., is leading a petition to bring the House version of The Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act out of committee after the Senate bill failed to pass. So far the petition has only three signatures, 18 votes short of moving the bill out of the House Judiciary Committee.

"I hope they recognize that the country is paying attention now," he told the Free Beacon on Monday. "You can't go home and explain that you support the murder of babies born alive.”

The bill would require doctors to do everything they can to keep a child alive if it’s born during an abortion procedure. Terry Schilling, the executive director of the American Principles Project, told the Free Beacon that the Born Alive Act has helped inform voters.

"This legislation puts teeth into enforcement so doctors can no longer get away with infanticide," Schilling said. "If I'm a campaign manager for a Democrat facing a tough race, I'm saying to him that this is an easy call."

He added that opposing the bill is a “radical position” that "shocks people.

"I think a lot of swing voters who moved toward Democrats in the last election will look at this issue."
