Employees at technology giants Google, Facebook and Twitter have donated millions to Democratic candidates for the House and Senate, and just a fraction of that to Republicans, Fox News reports.
According to Federal Election Commission filings, employees of those three companies have given $2.4 million in total to House and Senate candidates, with only $176,000 going to Republicans. In the previous midterm elections, workers from those companies gave just over $800,000 to congressional candidates, most going to Democrats.
"It is interesting to see that employees of the tech world are giving substantially more donations to Democrats than Republicans but not shocking, given many of these employees likely reside in blue states and the nature of the industry's employees-educated, higher income -- and because many of these employees may be affected by policies that are in the news right now like immigration to education," said Karen Sebold, who teaches political science at the University of Arkansas.
The CEOs of Facebook and Twitter have both admitted that their companies, and Silicon Valley in general, is dominated by left-leaning workers, but leaders from all three companies have denied that this has led to any political bias.
“[I] do understand the concern,” Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey said in an interview on Fox News Radio in August. “We have folks that are at various points in the political spectrum and they don’t feel comfortable today bringing up certain issues or their viewpoints on certain issues. And I don’t believe that is acceptable.”
