Sen. Fetterman's Wife Tweets She Left US to Avoid Media

By    |   Monday, 27 February 2023 05:17 PM EST

In a tweet that's now amassed 5.6 million views, the wife of Pennsylvania Democrat Sen. John Fetterman let it be known she was forced to flee for Canada to avoid the media frenzy surrounding her husband's admittance into the Walter Reed Medical Center earlier this month.

"I am not really sure how to navigate this journey but am figuring it out slowly," Gisele Barreto Fetterman tweeted. "One week ago today when the news dropped, the kids were off from school and media trucks circled our home. I did the first thing I could think of … pack them in the car and drive."

"We drove straight into … Canada (and lovely Buffalo NY)," she added. "We talked about lots of hard things and how we will all have to face hard things. About the need to be gentle … with all and with ourselves."

On Feb. 16, the office of Sen. Fetterman announced that he had checked himself into treatment for his "severe" depression after suffering a stroke in May, NPR reported. Following his stroke, surgeons fitted the congressman with a pacemaker and defibrillator to treat his irregular heart rhythm.

In the run-up to the 2022 midterm, Sen. Fetterman faced critiques from Republicans that his stroke had caused debilitating effects leaving him unfit to perform the roles of his post.
