Gallup Poll: 'Extreme Pride' In Being American Still Low

By    |   Thursday, 29 June 2023 02:42 PM EDT

The number of adults in the United States who say they are "extremely proud" to be American has remained near a record low of 39%, essentially the same as last year's 38%, but when combined with people who say they're "very proud," more than two-thirds, or 67%, show pride in their country, compared with last year's 65%, according to a new Gallup Poll.

The poll, released Thursday, showed that another 22% of the respondents say they are "moderately proud" to be American, 7% said they're "only a little" proud, and 4% said they are "not at all proud."

The results were based on phone interviews conducted June 1-22 from a random sample of 1,013 adults aged 18 and older, from all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

The numbers were widely driven by party affiliation, with Republicans remaining consistently more likely than Democrats and independents in expressing their pride about being American. The latest findings show that 60% of Republicans and 29% of Democrats expressed extreme pride, along with 33% of independents. The numbers were statistically similar to last year's readings in all three categories, but the independents' numbers marked a record low by one percentage point.

Meanwhile, the poll numbers have continued to drop about extreme pride in the years since when Gallup first asked the question in January, 2001. At that time, 55% of U.S. adults said they were extremely proud to be American.

The numbers climbed after the 9/11 attacks, with extreme pride numbers ranging from 65% to 70% in the years between 2002 and 2004.

However, starting in 2005, the numbers started dropping, but until 2017, a majority of those polled still said they had extreme pride in being American. Starting in 2018, however, extreme pride numbers have consistently been dropping, coming in at an average of around 42%.

The combined percentages, meanwhile, started dropping into the 80% range in 2005 and staying below 70% since 2020.
