While most U.S. citizens believed Russia to be America's "greatest enemy" in 2015, a new
Gallup poll released Monday shows that North Korea tops the 2016 "greatest enemy" list, followed by Russia, Iran and China.
Here are the poll results:
- North Korea, 16 percent;
- Russia, 15 percent;
- Iran, 14 percent;
- China, 12 percent;
- "Countries in which ISIS operates," 5 percent.
According to
Fortune, North Korea under the leadership of Kim Jong-un "has become increasingly active, with a rocket launch in early February, an alleged successful hydrogen bomb detonation in January, and a high-profile Sony hack back in 2014."
But despite North Korea polling as America's greatest military threat, 86 percent believe China's economic power to be a critical threat and 75 percent think the development of nuclear weapons by Iran constitutes a critical threat to the U.S.
The poll notes that "though the responses are more dispersed, there is continuity at the top. North Korea, Iran and China have consistently ranked high on the list of enemies, dating back to 2005."
