The main financial concern Americans face today is the cost of healthcare, according to a new Gallup poll released Monday.
The top five financial concerns, according to the survey:
- Healthcare costs: 17 percent.
- Too much debt/not enough money to pay debts: 11 percent.
- Lack of money/low wages: 10 percent.
- College expenses: 10 percent.
- Cost of owning/renting a home: 9 percent.
"As the U.S. Senate begins considering legislation that could significantly change the nation's healthcare system, the cost of healthcare leads the list of what Americans consider the most important financial problem facing their family," Gallup's Andrew Dugan writes.
"It is possible that news about the potential repeal of the ACA (Affordable Care Act) may itself be causing a concern about healthcare costs to spike."
That 17 percent is up from 10 percent in 2013, and down 2 percent from the 2007 record of 19 percent, according to the poll.
However, 10 percent of voters who were worried about low wages is the lowest percentage since before the financial crisis, according to Gallup.
The poll was conducted in telephone interviews from June 7 to June 11, with a random sampling of 1,009 adults 18 or older, with a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points at the 95 percent confidence level.
