The Rev. Franklin Graham has joined the group One Million Moms in calling for ABC to cancel its new series "The Muppets."
The series premiered Tuesday night and features more adult themes than the old "Muppet Show" from the 1970s, and is certainly more mature than its teaching of children's lessons on the PBS series "Sesame Street."
In the series Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy have broken up, but Kermit has a much younger, sexier new girlfriend who is an ABC executive – and also a pig.
Graham notes in a Facebook post that the new show will "cover a range of topics from sex to drugs to 'interspecies relationships' with no subject being off limits."
"The Bible says, 'Woe to those who call evil good and good evil.' That goes for Kermit the Frog as well!" Graham wrote.
Mature-themed Muppets sketches did appear on "Saturday Night Live" in the 1970s, but the show aired during late-night hours and "Sesame Street" characters such as Kermit weren't used.
One Million Moms
has contact information on its website for people to complain to ABC.
"Many parents unknowingly will let their children watch an episode only to find out its perverted nature too late, unless they are alerted ahead of time," the One Million Moms website says. "1MM and others need to get the word out to families to avoid this program at all costs."
