The sequester has knocked the wind out of the U.S. Navy’s sails.
The Navy says budget cuts imposed by the federal sequester have forced the cancellation of Fleet Week in New York, which was scheduled for May 22 to 29.
"We're not sending ships to the city this year for Fleet Week, and we're not sending any additional personnel for Fleet Week," Navy spokeswoman Beth Baker told
DNAInfo.com.
During Fleet Week, hundreds of young sailors in crisp white uniforms hit the streets of New York City, while the picturesque Hudson and East Rivers are filled with military boats.
For many of the sailors, it's their first time in the Big Apple — and they flood the city’s nightclubs, restaurants, museums and parks in search of fun and romance.
With the full-scale Fleet Week cancelled, the Navy said it will use local personnel to stage a few smaller events.
