Fire Breaks Out Near Newark Airport

One terminal was partially evacuated after a fire broke out in an electrical transformer beneath a section of Newark Liberty International Airport on Friday, N.J.com is reporting.

The fire forced the evacuation of a portion of Terminal C. It ignited in a manhole under a restricted access road near gate 71 at the airport, according to the website. Officials said the fire had no impact on flight schedules.

The airport said there was no smoke or fire inside the airport.

Due to a PSE&G manhole fire outside EWR's Terminal C, operations are being consolidated in the terminal's C-2 and C-3 wings. Part of the C-1 wing is still operational. There was no smoke or fire in the building. (1/2)

Travelers are advised to contact United Airlines for updated flight information. Flight operations are continuing. Backup generators are being used to supply power to the terminal while PSE&G fixes the problem.(2/2)

Further updates confirm there was a transformer fire in a PSE&G manhole outside Terminal C at EWR. Personnel inside the building confirmed there was no smoke condition inside the Terminal C-1 wing.
