A 40-minute video of a 12-year-old girl committing suicide last month is being circulated on social media networks like Facebook — and neither police nor the company can take it down.
Katelyn Nicole Davis of Cedartown, Ga. killed herself and streamed it on Live.Me Dec. 30. Now, copies of the video are appearing on Facebook timelines.
According to Fox5 Atlanta, there's nothing in the law that makes that illegal.
"We want it down as much as anyone for the family and it may be harmful to other kids," Polk County Police Chief Kenny Dodd told the station. "We contacted some of the [social media] sites. They asked if they had to take it down and by law they don't. But it's just the common decent thing to do in my opinion."
On Monday, Dodd's department shared this message on its Facebook page:
Facebook users can report the video as offensive. The social network, according to the Miami Herald, says this in response to that request:
"Thanks for letting us know about this. We've looked over the following post, and although it doesn't go against any of our specific community standards, you did the right thing by letting us know about it. We understand that it may still be offensive or distasteful to you, so we want to help you see less of things such as this in the future."
Facebook then describes how users can hide the video from their timeline.
