Congress will soon be forced to regulate Facebook, Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., said Wednesday on Fox News following a report the social media giant gave big tech companies "intrusive access" to users' data, friend lists, and in some cases even private messages.
"The hits just keep on coming," Kennedy told Fox News' "America's Newsroom."
"Mr. Zuckerberg told us that he was going to stop doing this, and now we find out yet again that Facebook has sold our private messages to other companies for bucketloads of money.”
The New York Times on Tuesday published the report about Facebook's practice, saying more than 150 companies benefitted from various levels of access given to them by the tech giant.
"I don't want to regulate Facebook, but doggone it, they've got to stop doing this," Kennedy said. "Facebook reaches 2 billion people. We're not talking about a few emails here. Facebook is no longer a company, it's a country."
A Facebook spokesperson told the Times it had not found any evidence the companies who had access to user data abused it in any way. The social media giant never sold the data and instead shared it with companies with which it entered into partnership agreements. Many details about the agreements remained secret.
