Exxon Mobil will begin issuing to investors financial information related to climate change, according to a Monday filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
"These enhancements will include energy demand sensitivities, implications of two-degree Celsius scenarios, and positioning for a lower-carbon future," according to the SEC filing.
In May, the Exxon Mobil board rejected a proposal from a majority of shareholders to include climate change in its business analysis, but has now reconsidered that proposal.
Harvard researchers reported that Exxon had not shared climate change information with the public after reading Exxon research documents, according to The New York Times in August. The researchers found that around 80 percent of the company's research and internal communication noted that climate change existed — but 80 percent of Exxon's statements to the public expressed doubt about it.
In May, Exxon Mobil asked President Donald Trump's administration not to end U.S. participation in the Paris climate change agreement. Trump later in May announced the U.S. exit from the accord.
