More than two-thirds of voters believe the ethical standards of politicians have deteriorated over the past generation, and a majority think Washington lawmakers are “unethical,” a new poll reveals.
The national survey, which Pulse Opinion Research conducted for
The Hill newspaper, found that only 7 percent of likely voters think the ethical standards of politicians have improved in recent decades, while 68 percent say they have declined.
The poll was conducted on June 9, three days after Rep. Anthony Weiner admitted that he sent a photo of himself in his underwear to a college student on Twitter.
Since then, he has confessed to a number of online trysts with other women, and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and national Democratic Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, among other Democrats and several Republicans have called for Weiner to step down.
When asked which party is more trustworthy, 36 percent of poll respondents said “neither,” while 31 percent picked the Democrats, and 29 percent said the Republicans.
