The presidential campaign for Sen. Elizabeth Warren D-Mass, is spending money to help try to unseat Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, the Daily Beast is reporting.
Roger Lau, Warren’s campaign manager, said resources are being used to assist Democrats in Senate, House and state legislative contests. He made his comments in a memo to supporters on Tuesday.
One of the targets is Maine, where there are a number of potential Democratic challengers looking at the race against Collins, the Daily Beast noted.
“We're hiring state directors and organizers in a number of states that have primaries and caucuses in March, Lau said. “And we're targeting our resources to invest in places that will be critical to keeping the House, taking back the U.S. Senate, and regaining ground in key state legislatures in 2020.
“That includes states like Illinois and California, where Democrats won a whole bunch of House seats in 2018 in close elections that we'll need to defend. It also includes states like Maine, which has a competitive Senate race and Georgia, where there will be two Senate seats up for election.”
The Daily Beast said progressive activists have targeted Collins and made unseating her a top priority this cycle. It said Warren’s involvement in the effort should help endear her to those looking to unseat Collins.
It is unclear how much money Warren plans to actually spend in the state, according to the Daily Beast.
“Remember: this election is about more than just beating Donald Trump — he's just the worst symptom of a corrupt system,” Lau said.
